Professional Vision Statement

My professional vision statement is to assist students to become independent and learn self advocacy skills in order to be successful outside of the school setting. (10-20-10)

Revised Vision Statement (12-12-10)

My professional vision statement would focus around the following areas:
            - Being the best advocate I can be for students with special needs
            - Assisting students in becoming independent adults
            - Collaborating with outside agencies, job sites, group homes, etc to meet transitional goals for my students
            - Be a patient, caring, compassionate, and open minded teacher in order to meet the individual needs of my students and their families.

SMART Goals (12-12-10)
1.       I will increase the number of team communication sessions (emails and/ or face-to-face meetings) to 1 time every 2 weeks for the 1st semester of the 2011-2012 school year. (Teacher Leadership, Best Practice Pedagogy, Learning in Community)
2.       I will utilize our Skyward program to monitor student progress, that are on my caseload, (missing assignments and grades) at least 2 times per quarter and communicate positives and/or negatives with 2-3 students for the remainder of the school year. (Technology in Education, Best Practice Pedagogy, Democracy, Diversity, and Social Justice)

3.       I will implement documentation strategies in order to monitor student progress on IEP goals for at least 3 students and document progress in my reading programs for the remainder of the school year. (Curriculum Development and Assessment, Educational Research)
Update-

1. During the 1st semester of the 2011-2012 school, I was able to increase the number of team communication sessions that I had with my paraprofessionals. I generally would send them emails of updates, positive comments, and suggested areas to improve. I think that this method helped with improving communication within our department. I also think that the paraprofessionals responded very well to this method. I would generally receive an email back from some of them with a few positive comments in return. I am glad that I implemented this form of communication and plan to continue to use it.

2. I have used our Skyward program to monitor student progress in regards to their grades. The students that I have in my study hall I was able to monitor on a more regular basis. This kept them on track and up to date on their assignments. It also assisted with holding the students accountable. Some of the students on my case load I do not see on a regular basis so this gave me an opportunity to connect with them. Checking student's grades also assisted with writing progress reports for some of the students IEP goals. I will continue to use this method to connect with students and to monitor their progress and grades.

3. This year I have implemented new ways to document student progress on their IEP goals. In my reading class, I have a student do daily reading checks. We keep track of her rate and errors in her workbook. In years prior, I did not do this with students. It has been a very valuable tool as it motivates the student and it gives me accurate data. Another student in my reading class is using a computer program. The computer documents his progress.  I also have him do sight words using flash cards on a daily basis. I document the words that he says incorrectly on a daily basis. This helps me to report progress towards his IEP goal. I also use the information to know when he is ready for new words. I have a student that we are working with on monitoring her own behavior. I have behavior sheets that she takes with her to all of her classes. She is to assess her behavior after each class and then have the teacher assess her behavior. I collect the sheets and monitor where she is at for each behavior. In my daily living class, I have implemented a folder with each of the student's IEP goals listed. I then chart what activity we did in the class and how well the student did. I also give up to 5 participation points a day. This tool has been very valuable and has allowed me to keep documentation of where the students are at with their IEP goals. I am happy that I have implemented this documentation method. I hope to expand on it for more students next year.
